VMware wanted a way to show their ‘Force for good’ case studies – a series I had already been creating as part of a year-long social campaign – in a unique, engaging and interactive way at their annual global event: VMWorld. The solution had to be impactful and yet be quick and simple to use, requiring no additional instruction for the event visitors.
I started with the UX, creating two different approaches that would deliver the brief across two large touch-enabled screens on site. I then created full UI designs, simple working prototypes and UX animations to show how they would work.
After presenting to the client and with some additional user testing, we chose a final route, and I then developed the whole thing as a bespoke TV web app, using HTML5 and a custom CMS, which meant we (and the client) could add or edit content as needed – even making changes at the event itself. This app was designed to work offline, as it was still uncertain if the TVs would have reliable internet access on the day.
The TV app was set up with event tracking and generated over 1,500 interactions during the VMworld conference. We were then able to re-purpose the app to work as an online portal after the event.
