We were asked by Groupon to come up with a way to generate interest in some of their more unusual gift ideas during the Christmas period.
Our solution was to create a fun and interactive web app where customers would pick traditional ‘boring’ gifts (like socks or soap) and then watch them transform into more unusual gift ideas. The idea was based around creating a ‘magic snowglobe’ – users would see their old gift floating inside and by shaking the globe, they could reveal Groupon’s more interesting alternatives.
I worked on several options as both simple wireframe prototypes and static visuals. Once the idea and visual style had been chosen by the client, I then created an interactive prototype (using Javascript & Adobe Animate). This was a fully dynamic version (which you can see in action in the video below) to demonstrate how the snowglobe would work when interacted with.
The client loved this so much that the prototype was actually used as part of the final piece – with the start and end sections being handed over to their developers for integration into the Groupon API. The final version ran for 3 weeks during December on the Groupon site – and despite getting no additional paid or organic ad support, it generated over 9,800 interactions.
